In embedded designs CMUX is a popular mechanism to use where an external PPP dial-up connection is used rather than the onboard IP stack. This allows the application firmware to have the connection up while still performing other operations on the unit such as querying network status, etc. This video walks through the tools that can be used on a Linux system to start CMUX, and its operation.

In some applications, the ability to know the location of the unit without powering up a GPS is useful. Using the method shown in this video, an application can perform a geolocation operation through the use of a pure cell ID. This is demonstrated using the WP7607, which is a 2G/3G/4G module.
